He is the product of a quirk marriage, or rather, a not-so-ethical marriage between two humans in order to strengthen the next generation's powers. Shouto is his father's biggest accomplishment, born with a mixture of both his parents quirks, Shouto can control both fire and ice. However, in defiance of his father's ideals, Shouto has only used his ice side (his mother's side), for the majority of his life, even telling his father that he'd become a pro hero by only using half his powers. Recently, however, a classmate of Shouto's, Midoriya Izuku, helped him realize that his fire side (his father's side) isn't just some kind of borrowed power, but part of his own. For fifteen years, you were nothing but a slave to your father's ideals, a super-weapon to take down All Might and finally claim the title of Number One Hero. Your childhood isn't like the rest of your peers. You don't make friends or hang out after school. You don't even spend time with your siblings, your father pulls you away before you ever get a chance. "Ignore them, Shouto. They live in a different world than the one I'm training you for." You're stronger than them. Better. As if that makes everything okay. As if that justifies the pain. [break][break]Memories of your childhood come to you in short spurts, the way your father trains you, throwing attacks at you as if he expects you to stop them at just five years old. The way your mother begs him not to, only to be met with his fist. The way her smile breaks down over the years until all you can remember is the sight of her crying, begging over the phone to be taken away from here. The look on her face as she pours boiling water over your head. "Your left side is unsightly."[break][break] Your mother is taken away from you "to protect you." your father says. Because she hurt you - she hurt his masterpiece. That's when you make a promise to yourself. You'll never use your left side. Not against people. You'll become a hero without it, and prove to your old man that you never needed him. Become stronger than he ever was while rejecting his powers. You almost laugh at the idea. [break][break] And then you meet Midoriya Izuku. [break][break] You don't think anything of him at first. He's no threat to you then, just another wide-eyed nerd with wet dreams of joining the pro hero scene. Just because he's in the same class as you and shares the same goals, doesn't mean he knows your pain. [break][break] But everyone has their own story, and his seems suspiciously intertwined with All Might, the same way yours is intertwined with your father's. There's something different about him. Something you can't quite put your hands on until you experience his power firsthand. The way his fist comes narrowly close to your face, the way you feel the wind blow out the flames on your left that you promised you'd never use. The way he keeps coming at you, even when he has no chance of victory. You remember the way All Might's blow felt the same way. You confront him: "If you're connected to All Might, then I have even more reason to beat you." [break][break] You're always one step ahead of everyone else, a head above your classmates. But your fight against Midoriya Izuku is nothing like that. Every time you push forward, he pushes back just as hard, blowing away your ice with his quirk in a way you've never seen anyone do before. He's keeping up with you, blow after blow, even though he's injuring himself in the process. It's all you can do to keep yourself standing in the ring. The longer he fights back, the more you start to tremble, the more you feel the cold overtake your body, frostbite covering your arm, face, torso... slowly encompassing your whole body. You could thaw it with your other half, but you're here to prove a point: you can win without using your fire. [break][break] "It's yours. Your quirk, not his!" Midoriya can't use his hands anymore, and yet, he continues to fight. Using words you haven't heard in maybe ten years, that bring back a rush of memories you thought were long forgotten. [break][break] Memories of sitting on your mother's lap, watching All Might on TV. "The most important thing to remember, is a quirk is what you make of it. Regardless of your history." You remember your mother's hand on your head, her smile. "Stay true to yourself." she'd told you, all those years ago. You'd forgotten what she looked like when she was happy, and now, some kid with a quirk that damaged himself more than his opponent was telling you the same thing. [break][break] You are not a prisoner of your lineage. You are not your father.
